Judd Legum's New Line same as his old line...

Judd Legum couldn't be bothered to discuss his the recent revelation of his new gig as a mudslinger for New York Governor David Paterson. But he has plenty of time to continue raising money for his campaign for House of Delegates in District 30.....and apparently plenty of time to again violate state campaign finance laws by not including the authority line for his campaign committee.

Obviously, Judd Legum doesn't take campaign finance laws seriously since this isn't his first breach of them. Nor does he seem to care that the penalty for violating such laws is disqualification from being a candidate for public office.

The irony of course is that Legum does not advertise his own fundraiser from his own campaign site or his Twitter account. It's almost like he has been going out of his way to hide his fundraisers from the public; it was only from a post by Paul Foer that I was even made aware of Legum's event. And it's not like his last fundraiser which was sponsored by lobbyists days after claiming his campaign would not accept contributions form...lobbyists.

Judd Legum and his hypocrisy are going to be the gift that keeps on giving in 2010....

Brian, I don't know that this fundraising activity by ActBlue is subject to Maryland campaign finance laws at this stage. As you have noted aggressively in other posts, Legum has a lot of out-of-state interest in his campaign; he made his bones with Team Hillary and has a lot of allies in the liberal netroots. I think that Legum spoke briefly at the 2008 presidential nominating convention, unless I am mistaken.

If his campaign apparatus and operatives are not handling this event themselves, his campaign would not only not be required to identify them as campaign activities, but it would be fraudulent for them to do so. If they are not doing this, it is right and proper for Legum not to be promoting the event (i.e. it's apparently NOT his/his campaign's activity, unless you can demonstrate otherwise.)

Point is, I see no evidence that this is Legum campaign event, just a fundraiser promoted online by one or more of Legum's many national allies. You DON'T need a campaign signature line to create a fan page on ActBlue's flow-through committee structure. Frankly it surprises me that no conservative/Republican equivalent has formed, especially in light of receipt Tea enthusiasm.

I guess my point is that you are making pretty aggressive accusations of crimes without a well-established factual basis or even a citation to the specifics of the statutes and regulations.

(Disclosure: I am an online acquaintance with Judd Legum, once worked briefly for his father early in my legal career and I generally support the election of Democrats in his District. I have never met him nor his campaign operatives face-to-face to my knowledge, and I may or may not donate to his campaign or election effort in some lawful way in the future.)

I would also like to point out that I discovered the link to http://www.actblue.com/page/berkinshaw because it is a passthrough link from http://www.juddlegum.com/18 which you will notice gets you to the same place. So there is obviously some connection between the two.

If Legum were just on the up and up, none of this would even be an issue....

Incidentally, I also linked to the citation (http://elections.state.md.us/summary_guide/sg_13.html#2) when we addressed this issue in April....
