Get Involved

Want to get involved in strengthening our state's child sex offender laws? The trial lawyers are an entrenched well-heeled special interest group who will fight tooth and nail against tougher penalties for child sex offenders. We need you to get involved and join the fight.

Here's your chance.

Go to Citizens for Jessica's Law sign up for the email list or contact President, Joan Harris or Vice President, Jerry Norton to get involved in the effort.

Delegate Mike Smigiel and Senator Nancy Jacobs have prefiled bills to prohibit concurrent sentences for child sex offenses, no contact orders, and eliminate diminution credits for child sex offenders.

If you wish to testify at the judiciary committee hearings on the bills, contact Delegate Smigiel's office.

Mark, "trial lawyers" includes defense counsel for insurance carriers, prosecuting attorneys, plaintiff's attorneys for victims who sue their attackers and criminal defense attorneys (inter alia.)

It's is true that the trial attorneys who play to Republican knee-jerk tropes don't get as much "face time" in the media; people remember Johnnie Cochran but don't remember the armies of insurance defense attorneys hired to defeat claims of responsibility. Indeed, irresponsibility is literally the stock in trade of the insurance defense bar. Similarly, prosecuting attorneys who play to wingnut cheap seats on the taxpayer's dime usually get less press than the criminal defense attorney counterparts.

The point is that every last one of them is a "trial lawyer," with the Republican-favored classes of trial attorneys often enjoying higher salaries and better benefits than their private bar counterparts.
