Obama Worship comes to Howard County

Well, it looks like the worship of his holiness Barack Obama has infected Longfellow Elementary in Howard County. See this email below, and get ready to be disgusted. Because no President, Republican or Democrat, should be glorified like this.

Hi everyone, below is the email that our son’s Assistant Principal sent us to let us know the wording of the Obama song that our son told us his class was instructed to sing last week…the teacher is part of the first grade team of teachers and is really nice, but this is not what we want our son doing at school or anywhere!

Any advice?

Unbelievable but then again not. This is the Peoples Republic of Columbia after all. Staunch supports of O'Malleyman, super hero of Maryland Morons

Aaron is on the right track-- My advice: find someone who has lived in a totalitarian country to talk to the class. Turn it into a teachable moment.

Hmmm, does this really surprise anyone? There is a portion of the population, (not just Columbia or Howard Co.), that really cannot think for themselves. Therefore, it's appropriate that they allow this to happen to their children, after all, isn't this "choosing civility?"
I haven't heard much of an uproar, have you?

It reminds me of the Hitler Youth Corps in the movie Cabaret.

There is that outdoor cafe scene where a young person starts to sing "Tomorrow Belongs to Me "and soon everyone joins in.

What has happend to this country?

Wow. You guys must not have much of a life to blow something as innocent as this way out of purportion. Shame, shame. Get the facts before you incriminate folks.

Uncle Dave said...

Giselle,

Seems with a comment like that you'd offer up something more constructive, than "shame, shame", don't you think?

What FACT, could actually change the context of this email, and furthermore make it acceptable?

Had she 'praised GWB' in song, YOU would probably having a 'hissy fit!' and quite frankly you'd be on the right side of the argument, or would you care to state something different....I think NOT.

While I find this revolting, I think we need to resist the temptation to make these indoctrinations too big of a deal. Let the Obamatrons hoist themselves on their own petards.

I understand the want to let the left hoist themselves on their own petards, but they won't. They can't when they have the likes of Maddow and Olberd-bag to cover for them.

And folks, unlike those of us who are active in following the Washington machine, there are millions of Americans who catch their daily dose of "news" on those shows, or shows like The Daily Show.

SOooOOOooo we need to get this kind of freakish indoctrination out there so people can see what's happening. I don't care who the president is, singing songs of praise to him or her is creepy.

As a taxpayer, I am interested in:

* How much school time was spent writing this poem/song
* Who wrote the song and who is leading rehearsals
* Whether parents were notified this was going to be done and given the chance to opt out
* How much class time was spent learning and rehearsing this song
* Under what class/subject this praise song belongs
* The reason the children are learning this song

Please respond to this email address. My Bible said there is only one good, that is the Father in Heaven.

Thank you for your time

Hate to tell you folks, but even assuming this is true, this is not a new phenomenon, nor is it a liberal phenomenon. Back during the Ford Administration, when William E. Simon was named the first head of the Federal Energy Administration (i.e. the Energy Czar, another not-new development), my 1st grade class did a play about the energy crisis, and sang:

"Oh Yes, Mr. Simon
Oh Yes, Mr. Simon
We'll Help in Any Way We Can Can Can!"

It's called civics. {ProfJonathan}

streiff said...

I'm calling bullshit on this.

In terms of accuracy, Bill Simon was not "energy czar" under Ford. Didn't happen. He was Ford's Treasury Secretary.

The idea that school children were singing hymns to the "energy czar" or rather the administrator of the Federal Energy Administration as was his real title, so no there weren't Obama-style "czars" back then, is fatuous.

As Richard Belzer said in his role as Detective Munch on Homicide, if you are going to lie to us, show us the respect of using a good lie.

ProfJonathan said...

Streiff, if you doubt that Simon was the first Energy Czar, perhaps you can take it up with the man himself, who titled the chapter of his autobiography about his energy-related role in the Ford Administration "The Energy Czar." You can see it for yourself on Google Books:

http://books.google.com/books?id=t9whMjtjCt4C&pg=PA75&lpg=PA75&dq=william+simon+%22energy+czar%22&source=bl&ots=b3L2me8HIc&sig=gL09YdZXQYT4z84tjAfz2Jb0q0Y&hl=en

if that URL gets through.

streiff said...

reading comprehension is your friend. It also prevents you from being an asshat.

1. He was administrator for the FEA under Nixon.

2. He was SecTreas under Ford.

All the more evidence that you are still denying us the respect of a good lie because now you're telling us you don't know what year you were in 1st Grade.

Don't bother coming back.

streiff said...

Just to amplify what happens when you make things up to try to win arguments, from the William E. Simon Foundation, http://www.wesimonfoundation.org/bio.php?parentpage=44&tm_id=67

"Appointed Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in 1973, Mr. Simon later that year also became the first Administrator of the Federal Energy Office. In 1974, President Nixon appointed him 63rd Secretary of the Treasury, a post to which he was re-appointed by President Ford and which he held until 1977."

This paean to William Simon which you claim was part of your "civics" instruction in first grade, actually was warbled by you and your kindergarten classmates... either that or Bill Simon was part of some kind of a cargo cult where you went to school, a situation which is just as probable as your story.

Hi Laurel,

When and if you speak with the vice principal or school officials, as them to explain how the song actually teaches information. The only reference to historical fact is that he's the first black president. If they were to make up a song about past presidents, they would surely include factual information instead of just words like good and "yes we can." For or against the president's goals, there should be factual references in the song. Good luck!

I'm not sure which is worse - forcing children to recite cultish propoganda or the amateur poetry they're being forced to recite.

streiff said...

there was certainly a felonious use of English involved but I think the whole Obama Cargo Cult is a lot more offensive.

It is very interesting reading all the comments, especially those that berate others for not having their facts straight. Has anyone checked the facts? One of the school's themes for the students is and has been since before the Obama campaign, YES I CAN. The idea is to motivate students to think positively and have confidence in themselves. The song was not intended to be full of presidential facts, it was intended to motivate the students to succeed in life. This is one song, not a play, not a production, not something that takes rehearsal time, a simple song with a positive message. It is also apparent that comments are being blocked, which is absolutely your prerogative, but shows that you are not willing to hear others opinions, only those that agree with yours.

streiff said...

Don't be an asshat. You have no idea what comments are or are not being blocked.

The facts are simple

Obama,

President Obama,

President Obama,

President Obama,

President Obama--He says

Yes we can!

President Obama--We say

Yes we can!

President Obama--I say

Yes I can!

President Obama--He says

Yes we can!

Barack Obama--Oh yes he rates,

The first Black President in the United States!

He's smart and he's--so so good!

He'll lead this country as he should!

He wants us all to work together,

To make this country even better!

Prez' Obama says--"Yes We Can!"

Make the US better--hand in hand!

Obama,

President Obama,

President Obama,

President Obama

President!

This was not the school theme prior to Jan 2009. You can try to spin this any way you wish but the fact is that this is a semi-religion among a lot of his followers.

No surprise at all. This school system would not put yellow ribbons on trees at White Oak Elementary in Columbia during Gulf War 1.

They totally failed teaching my youngest child to read (she later became a Deans list collegian)

Their idea of PTA board member function was to rubber stamp principal'sedicts.

Guess who took kids #3 and 4 out of school never to return til college. And thank God.
And after

Uncle Dave said...

mfb,

YES I CAN
YES I CAN

is a tad bit different and shall I say an acceptable message...you cannot substitute

Obama,
President Obama...

He says...
He's smart...

You get it?

streiff said...

of course you can't substitute it and claim it is a benign pre-existing slogan or the same as the the song you sang in worship of Bill Simon when you were in first grade or kindergarten or pre-school or one of those things.

This is what it is. What is disturbing is what looked like a single case of a very weird, if not deranged, teacher is now looking like a very common value held by the left.

I don't remember school being about making me feel good. Nothing about getting up at 7 am and trudging off to sit in a chair all day, studying, and taking tests, felt good. It was however, necessary. Learning can be fun, but the main goal shouldn't be having fun.

And the few things in school that were fun? Music class, or phys ed., or recess? None of them involved singing about Presidents Carter or Reagan.

Isn't the entire reason the president's administration is now talking about year-round school so kids will be able to compete in a "global market"? How will singing about the president help kids cure cancer or develop new technology? Having confidence and feeling good is necessary to lead a healthy, successful life, but that confidence should be self-driven. Why not use the "yes we can" message of the song without including a political figures name?

I have a kid in first grade at Longfellow. I spoke directly with the school principal today. The song was written by one first grade class collectively and sung once. It was part of a short lesson, not a continuing pattern of indoctrination or Obama worship. End of story.

The first grade uses the phrase "Yes I Can" as a tool to help the kids when they get frustrated. Each kid has a paper hammer taped to their desk to remind them. If they hit a tough spot, the use their hand as a hammer and say, "Yes I can!" while tapping down, to remind them not to give up. First grade can be a tough transition, so it's great that they teach this kind of positive self talk at the beginning of the year. This tool was around before the Obama campaign and I'm sure it will last beyond his presidency.

streiff said...

I missed the "paper hammer" and "tough spot" references in the song. Want to point them out to me. My membership in the Illuminati and the Knights Templar has expired and I can only read English now.

President Obama--He says

Yes we can!
