Hate to Say I Told You So
Well I am so glad that the rush job of the General Assembly on Friday afternoon was so incredibly productive for all parties:
More than 500 bars in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County were eligible to say open an extra hour on Inauguration Day, but only one did.So glad that we hustled this legislation through the process, with all of the extreme benefits the people of Maryland the residents of Anne Arundel County received. Though I think, in reality, the only "no-brainer" in this process was the one where somebody thought such cockamamie legislation was actually a good idea....
The legislation postponing last call for an hour was rushed through the General Assembly last week and was signed into law by the governor Monday.
The owner of ACME Bar and Grill in Annapolis, Kevin Epley, said taking advantage of the change was a "no-brainer." He paid the required $200 fee to the county liquor board so he could stay open until 3 a.m.
Many bar owners, however, said the extra hour wasn't worth the $200 fee. Rams Head Tavern general manager Mark Colberg said he didn't expect man people would be drinking after 2 a.m.

What did it hurt though? Isn't more freedom better?
It was a good thing. It promoted the American Dream and added to freedom and liberty.
More Freedom for a $200 fee. Just think of the resources wasted in passing this useless nonsense.
Take the effort and pass a low generally expanding, or eliminating, bar closing regulations if you want to expand freedom. Roll back the smoking ban in bars.
You really want to give this nonsense a pass by saying it gives "more freedom."
C'mon man!
When they force someone to pay the $200 fee (to make even more profit) then you can complain about how that affects freedom.
Funny, I guess you know more than the bars and reasturants that wanted to have it. Aren't those small businesses?
What resources were wasted. Add it up for us, please.
"I guess you know more than the bars and reasturants that wanted to have it."
Only one bar wanted it! I guess I know just as much as every other bar that didn't.
By the way, the administrative costs for each bill passed by the General Assembly is approximately $25,000.
This is literally an issue that was not worth the paper it was written on!
Greg, I do not believe for one minute that that bills cost the taxpayers 25,OOO dollars. ehrlich's employee parking garage however.....
this will undoubtedly come as a shock to you but what you believe really isn't dispositive of very much.
Kline,
So bars that didn't want it don't have to participate. I am sure they don't care. It impacts them nada.
I would love to know where that $25-k figure comes from and how it's calculated for each one. Or, does this bill "cost" the same as the any other.
Sure, add up the cots of the 90 day session and devide by the muber of bills passed and you have smerthing you can throw around. Don't pass the bill in question and the average "cost" for others would go up.
So what?
I hope the small businesses who participated did well by it.
