Will O'Malley Try to Frag Franchot?
Wally Edge, over at PolitickerMD, raises the question whether Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley will try to kill off fellow Dem and incumbent Comptroller Peter Franchot. It's an interesting question. However, Edge's caveats raise another question:
While O'Malley may look to frag Franchot IF the slots referendum fails AND O'Malley's poll numbers are up; what if his numbers are down? Will Franchot attempt to unseat an incumbent Democrat?

That Jim Smith is running for Comptroller is the worst secret in politics.
Jim Smith would lose big time. Franchot has the political clout right now to unseat the unpopular O'Malley in the primary. I am surprised he ruled out that possibility a couple weeks ago. Franchot seemed to be positioning himself to run. For instance, he suddenly became a fiscal conservative when it came to the 2007 tax increases. He publicly opposed the special session. While I certainly agreed with Franchot's sentiments at the time, I couldn't help but wonder what spawned his change of heart. After all, as a legislator Franchot never met a tax increase he didn't embrace.
