General Assembly Not Serious About Combating Illegal Immigration

By Chet Dembeck

Maryland lawmakers should take a page out of Tennessee's and Arizona's book, if they ever decide to get serious about cracking down on the uncontrolled influx of illegal aliens into the Free State.

Last year, both states passed laws attacking the heart of the immigration problem: the demand created by employers that hire illegals.

Because, let's face it, as long as their are companies willing to hire illegal aliens, they will continue to roam our streets, just as prostitutes will stand on every street corner if an unlimited number of Johns are allowed to create a demand with impunity!

Just as many police departments throughout the country have cut down on street walkers by arresting Johns, Tennessee and Arizona's new laws suspend the business licenses of companies that hire illegal aliens in their states.

They are actually attacking the demand instead of those providing the services.

Guess what? The crowds of illegal day workers standing on corners in both states are drying up, as many illegals go home, or migrate to other states like Maryland that give them a free ride.

Similar Law Needed In Maryland

In 2007, Casa de Maryland, the left-wing advocacy for illegal immigrants, boasted that it placed 10,955 day laborers in jobs in the state, according to the non-profit's latest annual report.

However, the non-profit said it was able to accomplish this by getting 1,751 new Maryland employers to hire Casa's thousands of day laborers, according to the report.

I wonder how many of these employers would have checked and double checked whether the workers they hired through Casa were legal, if they knew they would lose their licenses to do business, if they hired an illegal alien?

What do you think?

Good to know you are still around, Chet.

As for this topic, I quite agree. I do wish our legislators would take this seriously.

Particularly in view of the recent article of that contractor that unfortunately went overboard with an email to the guv's office.

Seems the underlying problem should be more "in the face" of our legislators. Since one article I read on it said he made $22K a year to support his family - - and losing that income to an industry wanting even cheaper labor??? (And probably paid under the table without benefits...)

Enough said.

Daniel,

Many Maryland construction workers, businesses and taxpayers are effected by our elected officials making the Free State a sanctuary for illegal immigrants and those who exploit them.

Unfortunately, the majority of Democrat elected officials will not even acknowledge the problem.
