SCHIP Bullchip
Last week the Dems trotted out a 12-year-old Baltimore boy to make their case for why the evil Bush administration was dead set on having kids die in the street. Like so much of the sturm und drang surrounding this debate, especially on the side of those supporting the bill as a stalking horse for some kind of neo-marxist health care scheme, there is a lot of heat but little light.
Curt at Flopping Aces took on the task of deconstructing the story.
The boy in question goes to private school, along with his sister, lives in a 3000+ sq ft home and the boy's father is owns his own company and doesn't provide health insurance. I'm not a health care wonk but this doesn't seem like the family SCHIP was intended to cover.
Read the whole story at Flopping Aces. Remember it the next time you hear the the vetoed SCHIP bill defended.

Who ever heard of parents sending their kids to private school in Baltimore City? I mean, why would a parent spend extra money they don't have to do such a thing. I really have no idea. Great work with the links, too.
The problem is that SCHIP is supposed to cover those in need.
Now I respect the decision of the parents to live in a 300 s.f. home, send their kids to private school, and to not purchase health insurance for themselves.
I just wish they'd respect my desire not to buy for them that which they refuse to buy for themselves even though they have the means.
I gave birth prematurely in 1993 without health insurance and i'm still paying the bill. I wish assistance would have been available to us. We are also self employed, do have insurance with a $5000 deductable to make it affordable. Are we supposed to lose everything first before our government steps in to give us a hand? My child goes to private school too and I'll eat peanut butter sandwiches every day to give my child a quality education.
I wish everyone would look at the big picture here. A family sustained a horrific crisis, needed assistance and wants to make sure others that deserve same get it.
Food for thought: In 2004 I was in Paris, consumed a savory crepe and went into anaphylactic shock. I was taken to a local hospital and treated immediately! I never got a bill!!!!!
In short, the government has no responsibility to protect you from financial loss. That has been a long standing principle. For instance, to get into long-term care a Medicare enrollee must exhaust all their resources.
We all have tragedies and unfortunate occurences in our lives. This does not mean 1) we aren't responsible for dealing with them or 2) that the government has a role.
Your choice on schooling is your choice. But why should I, who have my kids in public schools, pay for your misfortune so you can continue to do that.
you insensitive boob!
tell you what, I'll help pay for the health insurance you won't buy if you help me pay for private school tuition. Deal?
See, I'm not insensitive.
