The Chief Ramsey Bandwagon

P. Kenneth Burns at Maryland Politics Today is joining us in climbing aboard the bandwagon supporting former DC Police Chief Charles Ramsey as Baltimore Police Commissioner.

Now Mayor Sheila Dixon may very well be engaging in a bit of race baiting by floating the idea that she is considering a black police chief to replace the acting commissioner who is white. In fact, one would be rather surprised given the nature of Baltimore's politics if that were not the case. Be that as it may, Chief Ramsey turned around a thoroughly corrupt, demoralized, and ineffective police force in the District and there is no reason to believe he can't do the same in Baltimore. Conversely, there is no reason to believe the incumbent, Acting Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld can do that, or is even cognizant of the magnitude of the problem.

Baltimore is a critical part of the economy of the state and of Maryland. Unfortunately, it has been poorly governed, terribly managed, and the dystopia that has resulted is defended by a loud cadre of rather obnoxious white liberals who insist that mentioning the really obvious problems are "bashing," whatever the heck that is.

Hiring Charles Ramsey as Police Commissioner could go a long way towards restoring confidence in the Baltimore Police Department and putting the city on the second rung of Maslow's Heirarchy.

This is a non-issue. Dixon may not win. She would have no say in choosing commissioner.

and the Four Horsemen could appear at Inner Harbor which is just as likely as Dixon not winning.

She's only dangling both names as a ploy. She's trying to play both sides of the racial divide.

As a member of the DC Police force, I feel sorry for those employed by BPD. If "Chucky" comes to town say goodbye to hundreds of officers, crime rates hidden and reclassified, and "Chucky" on television everynight. Advice to Ms. Dixon, "Keep looking".

Ask the DC FOP how moral was when Ramsey was chief of DC. Everyone is much happier without him. Baltimore police and FOP should demand better

As a long time DC resident I've got to admit being gobsmacked at the idea that Chief Ramsey was less competent than Isaac Fulwood, Fred Thomas, Larry Soulsby, or Sonya Proctor.

I know having to work for a living after essentially being on the dole is tough but the DC police force today is much superior to what Chief Ramsey.

As to the opinion of the FOP, I've rarely seen cases where the FOP supports chiefs who actually demand that the rank and file work for a living. Morale always suffers when a new boss tries to fix an endemic "happy loser" attitude.

chief ramsey appears to be a semidecent commissioner who was ok in dc. His race shouldn't be the determining factor after all a black mayor will be deciding the choice commissioner so it will be a PC choice regardless. if the BPD is going to focus on ranking black officers their focus should be on the district majors to start- Baltimore is 65% black but has only three Black district commanders out of ten total district commanders. The Northwestern and Eastern are two districts without a Black commander yet over 90% of the residents there are Black. Additionally those commanders are not the best men for the job as the Homicide rate is out of control in both districts. This is where they need to focus on Black commanders because a White commissioner will still answer to a Black city and a Black mayor.
